One question I always hear people ask is what to wear for a job interview? The answer to this is very broad and has many factors that will ultimately influence your decision. For many, you can expect to be dressed in a suit or shirt and trousers, but others you can roll up in a t-shirt and shorts.
Firstly, let’s look at why you might be applying for a new job, which could be for many reasons. Over the past few months, there has been a lot of uncertainty as the future of businesses is unknown and many are hanging on by the skin of their teeth, but for others, it has been a time of business boom and some have even managed to upskill ready for the next opportunity.
Secondly, let’s look at where the interview will be. This time last year the answer to that would be in the office, but as the business world has been shaken by the coronavirus and we have adopted new norms, with social distancing being one, interviews and office work will never be the same again. It is a possibility your interview may take place online, and if this is the case you only really need to plan half an outfit, just remember not to stand up.
To give you a little advice on how to prepare your interview we have outlined a few basic options below, but remember to do your research into the company and the culture before-hand to avoid making any interview faux pas which could strike your name off the second interview list.
Formal Outfit
Despite us coming close to the end of 2020, some businesses still expect candidates to attend an interview in a formal outfit. If this is the case, you don’t have to kiss goodbye to comfort and put on the dreaded suit. A suit can be a comfortable outfit, some even say a tailored suit is like a second skin! Don’t worry if this is out of your price range as a well-fitting suit can be just as comfortable so when trying on, be sure to get your measurements taken first.
Smart Casual
If you are going to a more laid-back interview, then smart casual may be on the cards. You can make your own interpretation of smart casual but for a man, a simple pair of jeans and a shirt will always go down well but try and avoid trainers as these can make the outfit more casual than smart!
Creative
Depending on your industry you may be able to wear whatever you like when you attend your interview, despite many arguing you must wear formal clothing for an interview. Creative industries are more likely to promote perks such as no formal uniform requirement, home working, and video interviews, if you are lucky enough to have no outfit expectations in your next interview, show off your personality and make a memorable first impression with a personalised t-shirt from Banana Moon Clothing!
