Winter has been pretty punctual so far this year: It's only two days into December, and many of us have already overcome our lingering Thanksgiving food comas with holiday gift shopping (capitalising on the huge Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals, naturally) while enduring the season's first cold front.
We'll take the good with the bad — that would be impending (Zoom) party season plus windchill — to maximise the final stretch of the 2020 calendar with bells on, and a festive manicure to match. From a metallic take on tonal ombré to the glossy black French manicure, click through to see the pro's guide to the trendiest nail-art designs for winter. Find your favourite and let your on-point nails carry you through the remainder of gifting season, not to mention the last push of Q4 work meetings, in style.
Olive & June founder Sarah Gibson Tuttle tells us that this winter we'll see the trendy tonal manicure feature a mix of pastels and metallics. "It's the easiest interpretation of festive nail art," she explains, referring to the simplicity in each finger being painted a different shade. "Pale pink, white, blue, and silver tones seamlessly blend to create a shiny multi-dimensional moment."
This year, we saw a huge French manicure comeback following ample celebrity endorsements of the colourful and "deep French" spin-offs. For winter, the French twist is back with a seasonal expression in shade. "For holiday you can expect to see a glossy black tip," Tuttle predicts, like this interpretation by Insta-famous manicurist Mei Kawajiri.
Like jewellery for your fingernails, crystal appliqués feel apropos for the new year. “Appliqués like pearls or delicate Swarovski crystals will be very big this coming season," says Essie global lead educator Rita Remark. "They add a touch of glamour to a bare base." Not to mention, channeling a simplistic 3D manicure — like this one styled by content creator and professional hand model Antonia Cheri — makes for a fun DIY project before your holiday Zoom party.
If there's one single quintessentially holiday-friendly nail colour, it's a bright candy-apple red. You can wear yours as an accent tone, with silver or gold glitter, or simply two coats of bright polish — Remark recommends Essie's Geranium.
If you want your manicure to allude to the holidays in the most subtle yet festive way possible, go with a multicoloured canvas design. Here, LA-based nail artist Hannah Fischer designs a bright blue and deep purple blend, punctuated by gold foil overlay. "The glimmer of platinum gold is like the perfect final touch to dress up your mani," adds Tuttle. (Stacked gold jewellery also adds to the appeal.)
